Weekend Edition - September 3-5, 2010

"Eternity is at our hearts, pressing upon our time-torn lives, warming us with intimations
of an astounding destiny, calling us home
unto Itself." ---Thomas R. Kelly in

"Jesus is not one for boxes.  He broke out of the tomb that held Him.  He freed His friend Lazarus, too.  He threw the money lenders' boxes right out of the Temple.  In His earthly ministry, He constantly pierced people's puffy conventions and challenged their earthly comforts, luring them toward the risky business of eternal comfort.  He challenged the rich young ruler to give up the wealth that defined and confined him.  He wooed the woman at the well to be free of the sin that bound her.  In our own journeys with Jesus, is not the dynamic the same?  He calls us further than we would choose to go on our own." ---Dois I. Rosser, Jr. and Ellen Vaughn in The God Who Hung on the Cross

" . . . there is little difference between those who cannot read and those who will not read—the result of both is ignorance.” ---Jim Rohn in The Seasons of Life

"Our Lord's teaching is always anti-self-realization.  His purpose is not the development of a man; His purpose is to make a man exactly like Himself, and the characteristic of the Son of God is self-expenditure." ---Oswald Chambers

"The key to every person lies in someone else.  You are spiritually responsible for some other person or persons, and your obedience to the Lord Jesus will enable those people to obey." ---Dennis Kinlaw in This Day With the Master

"Are you trying to do too much?  Is your plate too full?  Instead of expecting other people to make your life easier, start doing what you can to help yourself.  Quit blaming other people for the tension in your life.  Give them a break.  They may be doing the best they can, given the fact that they must put up with you." ---Walter Albritton in Life is Short So Laugh Often, Live Fully and Love Deeply

"Affirming others is the most valuable skill a person can have.  It's easy, it's fun, and it gets fantastic results!  And the more we do it, the better we get at it." ---Hal Urban in Life's Greatest Lessons: 20 Things That Matter

“Life doesn’t come to us like a math problem. It comes to us the way that a story does, scene by scene. You wake up. What will happen next? You don’t get to know—you have to enter in, take the journey as it comes.” ---John Eldredge in Epic

"If you're looking for a big opportunity, seek out a big problem." ---Doug Carter in Big Picture People

"Herein is the significance of the cryptic 'Follow me.'  He [Jesus] was not advising people to go to church, or even to attend the synagogue; He was, instead, asking for recruits in a company of danger.  He was asking not primarily for belief, but for commitment with consequent involvement." ---Elton Trueblood in The Company of the Committed
